Trelew is the gateway to Patagonia's most accessible wildlife spectacle: Península Valdés (UNESCO World Heritage Site) about 65 km north, where southern right whales calve between June and December, Magellanic penguins nest at Punta Tombo (1 million strong), and elephant seals, guanacos, and orcas round out one of South America's richest coastal ecosystems. The Paleontological Museum Egidio Feruglio in Trelew holds dinosaur fossils found in the region.
