Bijie is in northwestern Guizhou Province in a region of Yi, Miao, and Hui ethnic minority cultures and outstanding highland scenery. The Caohai Lake National Nature Reserve near Weining County is a critical winter habitat for black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese — one of China's most significant high-altitude wetlands. The surrounding karst and plateau landscape of northern Guizhou has forested mountain scenery and minority village cultures largely off the mainstream tourist circuit.
