Chengde is a Qing Dynasty imperial retreat city in the mountains northeast of Beijing, home to one of China's most ambitious UNESCO World Heritage complexes. The Imperial Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang) — the world's largest surviving imperial garden at 564 hectares — and the Eight Outer Temples, which replicate sacred Buddhist architecture from across China and Central Asia including a near-scale replica of the Potala Palace, constitute one of the most extraordinary royal building programs in history.
