Chenzhou is in southern Hunan Province in the Nanling Mountain range, positioned at the scenic boundary between Hunan and Guangdong. Dongjiang Lake — a large reservoir surrounded by karst peaks and dense forest — is the primary scenic attraction, with island landscapes and boat excursions. Mangshan National Forest Park (about 70 km east) is one of Hunan's most biodiverse areas and home to the Mangshan pit viper (Trimeresurus mangshanensis), a strikingly green snake found nowhere else on Earth.
