Con Dao is one of Vietnam's most remote and pristine island archipelagos — historically infamous as the French colonial prison complex where political detainees including revolutionary leaders were held in the notorious 'tiger cage' cells. Today the national park has extraordinary coral reefs, critically endangered sea turtles nesting on protected beaches, and some of Vietnam's most undeveloped coastline. Hang Duong Cemetery, where Vietnamese revolutionary martyrs are buried, is a deeply moving pilgrimage site.
