Fuyun Airport serves the Koktokay (Keketuohai) area of northern Xinjiang, home to one of the world's geologically most significant open-pit mines — Pit No. 3 of the Koktokay Mine, which produced rare minerals including tantalum and lithium and is now a recognized geological heritage site. The surrounding Keketuohai National Geopark has dramatic granite canyon scenery carved by the Irtysh River, with relatively few tourists by Chinese standards. This is genuinely off-the-beaten-path territory.
