Head downtown

If you have a longer layover, why not take the opportunity to explore the city of Albuquerque? The airport is located 4 miles from downtown. Spend your day exploring the city or if you want to get some exercise go for a walk by the river on the Rio Grande River Trail. Always make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the airport and through security before your next flight.

Avoid downtown

If you have a more extended layover and don’t want to spend it in the city, use your airport downtime to get out in nature and go for an invigorating hike. Sandia Park is located 17 miles west of the airport and has lots of hiking trails for you to choose from. Spend the day getting some exercise and enjoying the fantastic views of the surrounding areas.

Bus: Local bus routes 250 and 50 connect the airport to downtown Albuquerque. Visit the ABQ Ride website for schedules and fare information.

Overnight Layover?

If you have an overnight layover at Albuquerque International Airport and want to get a good night’s sleep, there are many hotel options available within a few minutes of the airport. The Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel is located opposite the airport terminal and offers guests a free airport shuttle. The Hilton Garden Inn Albuquerque Airport and the Best Western Airport Albuquerque InnSuites are located just a few minutes’ drive from the airport and also provide a free airport shuttle for guests.

Luggage Storage

As with most airports in the US, there are no luggage storage facilities available at Albuquerque International Sunport. If you have a layover at ABQ and want to store your luggage, try these options:
  • Ask at the airport information desk for recommendations on nearby luggage storage facilities. 
  • If you are heading downtown, check for luggage storage lockers at bus and train terminals.
  • Use Google to find a luggage storage service. There are lots of apps and websites that offer luggage storage options in large cities across the US.
