Head downtown
If you have a 6+ hour layover at DUS, don't spend it at the airport. Get out and explore the surrounding area. Downtown Dusseldorf is located just 4.9 miles from the airport and is well connected via public transport links. You can get downtown in approx. 15 mins. Dusseldorf city is divided by the Rhine River, with its Altstadt (Old Town) on the east bank and modern commercial areas to the west. Avoid downtown
If you have a longer layover but don’t want to head into the city go for a hike instead. The Aaper Walk Hiking area is a forested recreation area with hiking and cycling paths throughout. Enjoy the peaceful German countryside while getting in a little exercise on your layover. Located 5.4miles from the airport. The quickest and easiest way to get there is by taxi.
Transport Options
Train: More than 350 trains from S-Bahns (urban trains) to ICEs (Intercity Express trains), stop at DUS every day. These trains will take you to nearby towns and cities and downtown Dusseldorf. There are two train stations at the airport. Catch S-Bahn and ICE trains from the Dusseldorf Airport train station, located on the east side of the airport and the S11 to downtown Dusseldorf from the Dusseldorf Airport terminal train station that can be reached by moving walkway from the baggage claim area of Terminal C.Bus: There are also two bus stations at the airport. Catch bus services from the bus station in front of the Main Arrivals Hall or from the Dusseldorf Airport train station.
Overnight Layover?
If you have an overnight layover at DUS and want to get a good night sleep, there are many options available to you at the airport. The Sheraton Duesseldorf Airport Hotel is just a 3-minute walk from Arrivals, on the roof of P3 Car Park. The Maritim Hotel is another great option for overnight layovers. The hotel is connected to Terminal C via a pedestrian bridge. Both hotels have fitness facilities available to guests.
