Head downtown

If you have a more extended layover at HKG, why not take the opportunity to explore the city? Although HKG is located 25.5 miles (41.1 km) from downtown Hong Kong, is well connected via public transport routes. The Airport Express will get you from the airport to Central in approx. 25 minutes.

Avoid downtown

If you have a more extended layover at Hong Kong International Airport but don’t want to spend it in the city, we recommend that you head out to explore the area surrounding HKG. The Lantau Country Park is located just a few miles from the airport and offers lots of hiking trails and scenic viewpoints and historical sites to explore. Leave your bags at the airport and spend the day hiking the trails and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Freshen up with a shower before your flight and continue your journey feeling fresh and energized.  Make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the airport and through security before your next flight.

Transport Options

Train: The Airport Express connects Hong Kong International airport to downtown Hong Kong. The journey takes approx—25 minutes and costs HK$115 per adult. The train departs from the Airport Station every 15-30 minutes between 06:00 and 00:45.Bus: several public bus routes serve hong Kong International Airport. The routes provide access to the surrounding areas as well as a more affordable (and much longer) alternative to the train.Taxi: Taxis are available from the Tax Station, located outside the Arrivals Hall. Hong Kong taxis are colour coded.
  • Urban taxis (red) operate in most areas in Hong Kong city.
  • New Territories taxis (green) mainly operate in the north-eastern part (i.e. north of Sha Tin) and north-western part (i.e. north of Tsuen Wan) of the New Territories.
  • Lantau taxis (blue) operate only on Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok.
All taxi services pick up passengers at HKG so head for the red taxis if you are heading downtown or the blue taxis if you want to explore Lantau Island during your layover.

Overnight Layover?

If you have an overnight layover at HKG and want to get a good night’s sleep, there are many hotel options available to you. The Regal Airport Hotel is directly connected to the airport via a covered walkway connected to Terminal 1. It is the most convenient hotel for overnight passengers and offers all the luxury of a full-service hotel, including on-site restaurants and a spa. The Novotel Citygate Hong Kong and the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel have located a few minutes’ drives from the airport, and both hotels offer guests complimentary shuttle buses too and from the airport.

Luggage Storage

Baggage StorageFor those that want to store their bags at the airport, there is short term luggage storage available on Level 5 of Terminal 1. Prices start from HK$12 per item per hour. Open daily from 05:30 – 01:30.
