Head downtown

If you have a long layover at Munich Airport, take the opportunity to explore downtown Munich. The airport is located approx. 23 miles (37.3 km) from the city and is well connected via the public transport system. Despite the distance, you can get downtown in just 40 minutes! Munich is famous for its beautiful architecture and vibrant cultural scene. Spend the day visiting the impressive buildings, enjoying the many museums and enjoying the fun and lively atmosphere of Germany’s third largest city and the home of the original Oktoberfest celebration. Avoid downtown

If you have a long layover at Munich Airport but don’t want to travel to the city, go for a hike in the surrounding area. The Isarradwanderweg hiking trail is located 6.7 miles (10.7 km) from the airport. Store your luggage at the airport and spend the day enjoying the beautiful scenery as you hike by the river.

Transport Options

Train: The best and most direct way to get downtown from the airport is by train. Two S-Bahn lines connect MUC to the city center, stopping off at surrounding areas along the way. The ride downtown takes approx. 40 minutes. There is a train station located in both terminals. Bus: The airport is well connected to downtown Munich and surrounding areas via a public bus system. The Munich Airport website gives information on all the bus routes that stop at the terminals.

Overnight Layover?

If you have an overnight layover at Munich airport and want to get a good night’s rest, there are many hotel options available close to the airport. The Hilton Munich Airport is the closest options, located just outside the airport terminal. Novotel Munich Airport and the NH München Airport are located within 5 minutes of the airport and both offer free airport shuttles for guests. All are great options if you have an overnight layover and don’t want to venture too far from the airport.

Left LuggageEnjoy your layover without your bags, securely store your luggage at the MUC Service Center. There are two locations in the airport terminal, find one in Terminal 2 (open daily from 05:00 – 00:00) and in the Munich Airport Center (open daily from 06:00 – 22:00).
