Head downtown

If you have a longer layover at TPA, take advantage of your downtime and head into the city. Downtown Tampa is located just 7.7 miles from the airport. Tampa is a vibrant city, home to many museums, parks and delicious restaurants. The scenic city and generally good weather are perfect for walking. Take a trip out to Harbour Island to the lighthouse for some amazing views. For more details on what to do during your airport layover at TPA, visit the Lonely Planet Guide to Tampa.

Avoid downtown

If you have a longer layover but don’t want to spend it in the city, spend it at the beach instead! Ben T Davis Beach is a stretch of sandy beach located close to the airport. It is a popular spot for swimming, picnics and boating. There are a number of restaurants and shops along the boardwalk so you can grab a bite to eat after your dip. Keep in mind that there are no public showers available at TPA so if you do go swimming you may be a bit salty catching your flight.

Transport Options

Bus: The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) and Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) bus services both serve TPA. The bus stop for both services is located at the Rental Car Center. Follow signs to Remote Curbside.

Overnight Layover?

If you have an overnight layover at TPA and want a good night’s sleep head to the Tampa Airport Marriott Hotel. The hotel is located in the airport terminal, so you don’t need to leave the airport grounds to check-in. This full-service hotel has everything you need for a pleasant stay including a fitness center and an outdoor pool. Day rooms are available for those with shorter layovers.

Luggage Storage

As with most airports in the US, there are no luggage storage facilities available at Tampa International Airport. If you have a layover at TPA and want to store your luggage try these options:
  • Ask at the airport information desk for recommendations on nearby luggage storage facilities.
  • If you are heading downtown, check for luggage storage lockers at bus and train terminals.
  • Use Google to find a luggage storage service. There are lots of apps and websites that offer luggage storage options in large cities across the US.
