Flight Delays in USA - Stay Prepared with Sanctifly's Flight Delay Benefit

Despite the convenience and speed that air travel offers, flight delays remain an unavoidable aspect of the industry. Whether due to weather conditions, technical issues, or other unforeseen circumstances, delayed flights can disrupt our plans, cause stress, and even lead to missed connections. In this blog post, we will explore the recent flight delay statistics in the USA and introduce Sanctifly's Flight Delay Benefit, a game-changing solution for frequent travelers.

Flight delays are an unfortunate reality of air travel. A recent survey conducted by Forbes says, “ A resounding 87% of survey respondents expect to travel at least as much as they did in the prior year, with 49% selecting that they expect to travel more. This is especially true among younger respondents, with 59% of those between the ages of 18 to 26 planning to travel more in 2023. This is impressive considering 45% of respondents traveled once or twice in 2022, with 42% traveling three or more times in 2022.” The holiday period records the highest number as always. “More than 4,750 flights across the country were hit by delays on 3rd July 2023, while 974 flights were canceled” according to FlightAware

Sanctifly understands the frustrations and inconveniences caused by flight delays, which is why they offer a unique Flight Delay Benefit to their members. Sanctifly is an innovative platform that aims to enhance the travel experience by providing access to airport amenities and wellness facilities around the world. The Flight Delay Benefit is designed to offer passengers a more comfortable and productive experience during extended delays.

Instead of being confined to crowded waiting areas, travelers can enjoy a tranquil environment.

Wellness and Fitness: Delayed flights often disrupt our routines, but with Sanctifly, members can access fitness centers and spas within the airport. This enables them to engage in a rejuvenating workout, indulge in a spa treatment, or even take a refreshing shower before continuing their journey.

Increased Productivity: Sanctifly understands that time is valuable, and flight delays can be an opportunity to be productive. With access to amenities such as quiet workspaces and reliable Wi-Fi, members can catch up on emails, prepare presentations, or complete important tasks, turning delay-induced downtime into a productive work session.

Additional Options

Get a ride from your airport

Our members can now get up to 15% discount on SIXT Car Rental at participating locations. When booking rentals in category P (Premium), L (Luxury), or X (Special), our members receive complimentary access to the exclusive SIXT-operated Diamond Lounge at selected locations around the world. Our members also get an exclusive 8% discount on SIXT Ride, meaning you can book chauffeur-driven vehicles and airport transfers for less! If you have a long layover, treat yourself to a chauffeur-driven experience and explore your surroundings in style!

If your flight has been disrupted by a couple of hours and you are still in pre-security, we recommend you get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Our app recommends over 160 parks (and beaches!), all within a 5-mile radius of the airport. Go for a walk, run, stretch in the park, meditate, and simply enjoy the open air. Don’t feel like leaving the airport? We also have many other free recommendations such as meditation rooms, observation decks, or art exhibitions. BWI Airport even has its own 5.7km indoor walking trail.

We even include luggage storage options at most airports for you to drop off your bags.

Flight delays can be stressful and disruptive, but they are a reality of air travel. As we've explored the recent flight delay statistics and updates in the USA in 2023, it's evident that delays continue to be a challenge for both airlines and passengers. However, with innovative solutions like Sanctifly's Flight Delay Benefit, frequent flyers can find respite and make the most of their time during delays.

Meditation For Beginners - Tips For Meditating In A Busy Place

Meditation is a great tool for managing stress and maintaining calm, especially when on the road. However it can be a difficult skill to master. Here are some tips to help you get started with your meditation practice, especially if you find yourself trying to practice in a busy place.

Meditation is a practice that uses mindfulness or focusing the mind on a particular thought or activity such as your breath, to achieve mental clarity and emotional stability. It is practiced as a part of many spiritual traditions around the world and has become a prominent fixture in the modern wellness culture. And this is not surprising, meditation and mindfulness has been proven time and again to have positive benefits on mental and physical health. It has been shown to improve focus and concentration, manage anxiety and stress, help you feel more grounded and connected to the world around you, help you sleep and so much more.

Taking some time for meditation is one of the recurring pieces of advice we (and lots of other travel wellness brands) suggest for managing stress while on the road. We even have some travel specific guided mediations in the Sanctifly app that you can follow while at the airport or on a flight. But meditation is a skill and though it may come easy to some, for many it requires learning and practice.  So rather than just tell you to go and meditate, we wanted to share some tips to help make meditation easier, especially if you are a beginner.

two-people-sitting-meditation.jpg

The first step is take some time to prepare and plan and become acquainted with meditation. Deciding to try meditation for the first time while you are stuck in the middle of a busy airport may not be the best option and will not give you a proper insight into its benefits. Meditation requires practice. Sitting still and emptying your mind does not come easily. If you are completely new to meditation the first thing you need to do is to find the best type of meditation for you. There are hundreds of meditation types and techniques that come from different traditions and have different focuses and desired outcomes. Headspace gives a great breakdown of the different meditation types here.

For beginners, we recommend choosing guided meditations to help you stay focused and drown out external noise while practicing. There are several guided meditations available to Sanctifly members. You can find them in the ‘Sanctuary’ section of the app. Guided meditation will be especially helpful if you are practicing in a busy place such as an airport, but that comes later. Start at home. Practice sitting in silence and try to focus on your breath with no other distractions. Follow along with a guided meditation at home and start to make meditation a habit. Choose a set time a couple of days a week to sit in silence and meditate at home. This only needs to take ten minutes, it’s all about building the habit and becoming more familiar with the techniques. Practice makes perfect and if you only meditate when you are at the airport it is going to take a long time to build up the skill.

main sitting in airport meditation tips for beginners.jpg

Once you become more familiar with meditation you can then take the practice on the road. The airport is often a busy and stressful place and taking a moment to relax, meditate and center your mind will help reduce that stress. Follow these tips to make meditating at the airport (or in any busy place) easier for you.

1. Find a quiet space.

Of course, in an airport, this is easier said than done. However even in a noisy and busy place, such as an airport terminal, there are some opportunities for finding quiet. Check out this post on ‘Finding Sanctuary: How to find quiet space at any airport.’

2. Remove distractions.

Removing as many distractions as possible will help you in your meditation practice. Turn your phone off or on silent. Pack noise cancelling headphones so you can drown out any background noise. Creating as quiet and peaceful an environment as possible will help you to focus.

3. Sit comfortably.

Simply sitting upright in a chair will work. You do not need to be sitting cross legged on the floor to meditate. Take the time before you start to get as comfortable as possible, make sure you are warm and hydrated. By making yourself as comfortable as possible you remove the possibility of distracting thoughts and allow yourself to become more focused on your meditation.

4. Ground yourself.

Being present and grounded in the moment is essential for meditation. Sit with your feet on the floor and practice the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique to help quiet your thoughts and bring your attention to the moment. First list 5 things you can see, then four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. Mindfulness expert, Jay Shetty describes the technique in more detail in this interview.

5. Always come back to your breath.

Make your breath the focal point of your attention. And don’t be too hard on yourself. If your thoughts start to wander gently bring them back to the breath. Remember, even the most well practiced meditation experts can have off days.

6. Follow a guided meditation.

A guided meditation will help you to stay focused. It will also help to drown out background noise and gives you a definite time for your practice.

The next time you need to meditate in a busy place, or if you are just starting out on your meditation journey, follow these steps to help make the most of your practice. Meditation is a fantastic tool to help manage stress levels. As more airports wake up to the fact that travelers need wellness amenities we are starting to see yoga rooms pop up all over the world. And the best part is they are often free to use! Check out these 5 free yoga rooms available at busy international airports.

Travel and wellness activities should go hand in hand. Travel can be stressful and chaotic and having the opportunity to relax and recharge while traveling can be a life saver. Airports and airlines are starting to wake up to this fact and we are seeing more and more wellness focused activities on offer for travelers. Yoga rooms and spaces are popping up in airports all over. Often what started as a pop up has become a permanent fixture due to popular demand. The trend seems to be more evident in the US however we are sure it will become the norm worldwide in the coming years. So if you are looking for something good to do at the airport and want to get in a good stretch before your flight check out these options for free yoga rooms at airports:

Stretch at O’Hare Airport

One of the busiest airports in the US, and ranked as the sixth busiest airport in the world, Chicago O’Hare saw more that 83 million passengers pass through its terminals in 2018 and that number has been steadily increasing over the past 10 years. With such a high volume of passengers its no wonder the airport is making an effort to offer some relief from the chaos for its travelers. The Yoga Room at Chicago O’Hare is a tranquil space where passengers can relax, stretch and meditate for free while waiting for a flight. Located on the Mezzanine level of the Terminal 3 Rotunda the space is bathed in natural light thanks to a full wall of frosted glass windows. There are exercise mats available for visitors and wall mounted displays that show yoga poses to follow. The screens also show flight information so there is no chance of missing your flight.

Airport: Chicago O’Hare

How do I get there?: Located near the Urban Garden on the Mezzanine Level of Terminal 3.

Opening hours: 06:00am to 10:00pm

Yoga Rooms at San Francisco Airport

San Francisco Airport is the second busiest airport in California and the 24th busiest airport in the world. SFO saw more than 57 million passengers pass through its doors in 2018. Although it’s a bit quieter than O’Hare, San Francisco Airport is still aware that its passengers need some space for rest and relaxation. SFO was one of the first airports to open a facility such as this and it is a trend that many other airports have followed. There are two yoga rooms at San Francisco Airport, one in Terminal 2 and one in Terminal 3. Both are located past security and passengers require a valid boarding pass in order to access them. The yoga room is calm and serene and is described as a place for yoga, meditation and self-reflection and best of all it’s free to use!

Airport: San Francisco Airport

How do I get there?: Located in terminal 2 past security in boarding area D and in terminal 3 past security in boarding area E

Opening hours: 05:00am to 11:00pm

Yoga / Exercise area at Dallas Fort Worth Airport

Dallas Fort Worth is the fifteenth busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and the fourth busiest airport by aircraft movements. With six terminals to navigate and over 69 million passengers passing through its doors in 2018 DFW airport can be an overwhelming place. If you are looking for somewhere to exercise or relax DFW has the perfect spot do you. The airport has a yoga/exercise area that is free to use by traveling passengers. It is located past security at Gate D40 in the hallway that connects Terminal B and D. However, this yoga area may not be for you if you are looking for some peace and quiet or privacy. The space is not quite separate from the hustle and bustle of the airport with only a room divider and some greenery blocking it off. But if you pop in your earphones and get in the zone you can definitely find some peace within the chaos. The studios provide guests with complimentary practice mats and other exercise equipment such as exercise balls and stretch bands. There are also displays which show instructional videos that you can follow along with or do your own thing.

Airport: Dallas Fort Worth

How do I get there?: Located at Gate D40 in the hallway connecting Terminal B and D and at Gate E31.

Opening hours: 24hr

Two yoga rooms at Frankfurt Airport

Yoga rooms or spaces at airports it not such a big trend outside of the US unfortunately but Frankfurt Airport is looking to change that. Ranking at thirteenth busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic this calm and serence space is a welcome treat. You can find one studio in Terminal 2, Area D on Level 3 and the other in Terminal 1, Area C on Level 2. Relax at Miami International Airport

MIA is a major hub for the Southeastern United States and the main hub for long haul flights in South Florida. In 2018 over 45 million passengers passed through the airport and that makes it the thirteenth busiest airport in the United States and the 40th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic. Miami International Airport has a free yoga room available to its traveling passengers and uniquely this yoga space is not located past security. That means you do not need to go through security to use the space. The yoga room is located in Terminal H on the first floor and visitors can use the complimentary mats available in the space.

Airport: Miami International Airport

How do I get there?: Located before security in Terminal H on the first floor.

Another option: London Heathrow

There is a yoga room available at London Heathrow but unfortunately it is not free. The yoga room is offered by the Skyteam Lounge and you can purchase a day pass to the lounge for approx. £30. The lounge has lots of other amenities such as showers and day beds so it could be a great option for anyone with a long layover at Heathrow. Heathrow has another option in Terminal 3, a rest and relaxation room located after security between gate 24 and 25 that is free to use. Although not set up for yoga it is a good spot to relax and meditate while waiting for a flight.

Not all airports have a space for travelers to practice yoga but that doesn’t mean you have to go without! You can always find an empty gate to get some peace and quiet and get in a good stretch. Log into the Sanctifly app to find our stretch and relax or meditation video series. Follow along with travel wellness expert Sara Quiriconi and make healthy choices for your airport downtime. You can find out more about all the benefits you get as a Sanctifly member here.

1.       ART MUSEUM

Take a break from the surroundings and visit the art museums located within Terminals 2, 3 and 4. They contain art, photos, artefacts and some historical stories of the area. The exhibits change regularly and the art must come from Arizona, and somehow reflect that, or aviation in some way. There are also wall posters telling you where to find the art, a brochures, and a map.

2.       WALKING

Squeeze in some more exercise and follow the the Sky Harbor Fitness Trail located in Terminal 4. What to do on your Dallas (Fort Worth) Layover

“Relaxing for the mind and invigorating for the body.”

Smart choices for the healthy traveler

Suggestions for a DFW layover

1 HOUR

DFW mosaic.jpg

1. ART WALK

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is made up of five semicircular terminals built around an arterial road known as “International Parkway”. And it is big. Larger in fact than the island of Manhattan and the 3rd busiest airport in the world. So if you have some time to spare there are plenty of corridors to stroll, and if you are in terminal D you have an ideal walking path. Endorsed by the American Heart Association, this path measures seven-tenths of a mile and leads right through the Airport’s Art Program. Featuring more than 30 sculptures, paintings and mosaics by local, national and international artists this collection of work breathes life and culture into the terminal. Underfoot you will see a series of colourful medallion terrazzo floors. Hanging from the ceiling and on the walls will be eye-catching paintings and sculptures, many on a very impressive scale. And if you make it all the way to the end and you want to work the legs even further, climb the 55-foot high staircase up to the Skylink. Not a bad workout. Not a bad walk.

2. PEACE & QUIET

As is often the case, the two quietest spots in the airport are the Yoga room and the Chapel. In DFW there are five interfaith Chapels (at A24, B25, C15, D21 & E4) and two Yoga rooms (one at gates B1/D40 & one at E31). It’s never too late to roll out your first mat and to introduce this ancient tradition to your lifestyle. The benefits of yoga are numerous: it improves your posture, muscle strength, flexibility, blood flow, breathing, self-esteem, immunity, and heart-rate, as well as releasing tension and making you feel happy, healthy and focused. When it comes to prayer the benefits are, or course, infinite.

AdobeStock_98088998.jpeg

 3. EAT

Texas is known for BBQ and TexMex. You will find several examples of this cuisine across the donut-shaped terminals of DFW. You know what they say, when in Rome eat like the Romans, and when in Dallas eat like the Cowboys! Sticky ribs, smokehouse specials, tasty burritos: yummy. If you are arriving back from a Sanctifly workout at 24 Hour Fitness then maybe you deserve some protein. Having said that, if you are determined to track down a healthier alternative there are options. For smoothies and yogurts head to Red Mango (B10, C22) or Freshens at gate E26, while Banh Shop near gate D10 make good fresh baguettes and salads inspired by Southeast Asian street food. If you have no dietary restrictions I recommend indulging in the chopped brisket sandwich at Cousin’s Bar-B-Q! Cousins are low-and-slow specialists with a reputation as one of the best smokehouses in the state. All their meat is prepared, packaged and shipped daily from their pits in Fort Worth. The ultimate Lone Star meal. When in Rome.

 2-3 HOURS

4. OBSERVATORY

DFW Airport has a fantastic outdoor area from which to watch the aircraft takeoff and land on the runways. Founders Plaza Observatory has become a favourite spot for locals, airport staff and aviation enthusiasts. Post-mounted binoculars are provided to allow people to get a closer look at the planes on approach or as they accelerate towards take-off. To enhance the experience radio broadcasts can be heard of the air-traffic control conversations. This 6-acre area is popular with families and is known as a great picnic destination. So grab a sandwich or a salad in the airport then take it outside to ‘experience the exhilaration and awe of planes landing and taking off right in front of your eyes'. Best seat in the house.

5. BEAR CREEK GOLF

You can’t get a golf course closer to an airport than Bear Creek is to Dallas Fort Worth. Adjacent to the DFW grounds Bear Creek Golf Course is a 36-hole championship-calibre course with an excellent reputation. The two courses - west and east - were both designed by renowned golf course architect Ted Robinson. Golf Digest listed it as one of the “Top 50 Resort Courses in America” and The Wall Street Journal called it one of the “10 Great Places To Play Golf”. If you don’t have the time for a full round there are chipping areas, putting greens and driving ranges on which to hone your skills or pass the time. 35 balls will cost you just $5 and you can get 125 for $12. Five minute cab ride. Good restaurant too.

AdobeStock_80774877.jpeg

6. BIG KID

We all grow up, but not all of us grow out of our childhood obsessions. If you were once a child with a love for Lego or a kid fascinated by wildlife then the city of Grapevine, Texas may have a couple of treats for you. Legoland and Sea Life are both located on the same site not far from Grapevine Lake. If you take a 10-minute taxi to this twin attraction there is every chance you will be the only grownup paying for one ticket. Yes, its a place for kids. But hey, what do you care! There’s no shame in reliving your youth. Besides, you’re never too old to enjoy toys and animals. Legoland has several exciting features for you to wander around. If those colorful little interlocking bricks still thrill you then you will have a great time seeing all the environments and sculptures on display. Sea Life contains thousands of creatures, as well as interactive touch pools and a 360° ocean tunnel. Spread across 16 zones you will encounter starfish, jellyfish, turtles and reef sharks all swimming and floating in the tanks of this popular aquarium for your interest and amusement. You can pay into one or the other, or pick up a combined ticket for both. Both attractions start from around $16 if you book online. A feast for the eyes. And a treat for the big kid.

AdobeStock_88053458.jpeg

7. SALAD BAR

If you have had enough of eating airport food and you need something fresher and healthier take a 10 minute cab to Southlake. There you will find Salata on the East State Highway. They have been in business for 12 years and today they have around 50 locations across several states. Calling themselves the Next Generation Salad Bar, they believe that if you eat good, you will look good and feel good. Step up to the counter, choose some leaves, select from 50 toppings chopped daily in-house, and top it off with one of their 10 signature dressings and the fresh, lean protein of your choice. Soups and iced teas are also available. Salad prices start from $8 but once you have added meat and all your favourite ingredients you can expect to pay closer to $15. You can get it all in a bowl or in a wrap. Then, we suggest taking it outside. Walk back to the highway and take a right onto State street. That will lead you down to McPherson Park and Southlake Town Square. Find a bench and enjoy your fresh crunchy lunch while you watch the people of Southlake go about their day. Better than a chimichanga in the terminal. Arrive back looking and feeling fresh and healthy.

4 HOURS

AdobeStock_137590540.jpeg

8. GRAPEVINE LAKE

Grapevine Lake is actually a reservoir with the primary purpose of acting as a municipal water source. However most locals know it as a place of recreation. A pleasant place to visit for a stroll or even for watersports; fishing, swimming, and various forms of boating all take place regularly on the reservoir. Discover Kayak offer classes from April to October with a popular instructor. He is located to the southwest of the lake about 20 minutes in a taxi from the airport. If you have the time to spare and his schedule fits with yours why not give it a shot. Paddling out across still water for a few hours can be very relaxing for the mind and invigorating for the body. Rockledge Park is even closer to the airport and is a good spot to hike by the waterfront or take a quick swim. Nearby there is a large hotel called the Gaylord Texan Resort where you might like to grab a bite in one of their several bars and restaurants. And if you want to dine right on the lake look no further than Big Daddy’s Ship Store. Looks like a dive but the burgers and seafood snacks are good and the view and atmosphere is great. Best enjoyed with live blues.

AdobeStock_78476942.jpeg

9. DALLAS

DFW Airport is located halfway between two cities; hence the name. Fort Worth is to the west and Dallas is to the east. If you have the required hours available before your flight take your pick and you can be there by taxi inside half an hour. Dallas is the cultural hub of north Texas. There are art museums, a botanical gardens, a zoo and Reunion Tower - an iconic observation deck with city views. But if you do make the journey to downtown Dallas you have to make your way to Dealey Plaza, the site of John F Kennedy’s assassination. Stand on the concrete pedestal where the most famous home video in US history was filmed by Abraham Zapruder. Look for the large X on Elm Street which marks the place where the second fatal shot hit. Visit the Sixth Floor Museum of the Texas School Book Depository, the spot from which, according to four government investigations, LHO shot JFK. See the view from the window as Oswald would have seen it. Wander the area, feel the history, or even choose to engage with one of the many street peddlers selling books and newspapers about the first, the original conspiracy theory. Fascinating and moving.

AdobeStock_157211116.jpeg

10. FORT WORTH

If you decide instead to visit Fort Worth for your layover, go straight to Sundance Square. The Square spans 35 blocks and has dozens of options for shopping and dining. It is a popular area with modern and historic buildings along its red-bricked streets where you can browse the gift shops, clothing stores, and jewellers before sitting down to steaming Prince Edward Island mussels at the Bird Cafe or a rooftop cocktail at Reata. The Square is also the center of entertainment in the city. Comedy venues, live music bars, and the theatres surrounding the square offer plenty to see and do. Being on a layover it is likely that you won’t be in town at the right times to catch the acts but you never know, you might get lucky.
